While I have always loved musical theater, relishing my visits to Broadway as a child and playing in pit orchestras in high school and college, it was not until I moved to New York City that I developed my passion for musical theater writing. When I first began composing, I was a student at NYU, studying for my Masters in Music Education. In a class on Theater for Young Audiences, I felt the spark of compositional creativity and started working on my first show, Walker Road.
Throughout the process of composing my first show, I attended many classes, workshops and lectures on musical theater writing. I was in a semester-long Writing Workshop at the Dramatists Guild Institute with composer and lyricist Mark Hollman. At Theater Resources Unlimited, I participated in the Writer-Director Lab, Practical Playwriting Workshop, Writer/Producer Speed Date and How to Write a Musical that Works Workshop. I also took private composition lessons with Joe Church, original musical director of The Lion King.
Upon receiving my teaching degree, I taught pre-K through 8th grade music at Brooklyn Dreams Charter School and then K-4 music at Community Partnership Charter School. I found myself infusing my curricula with musical theater, ultimately directing two kids shows in an after-school program: The Lion King JR and Willy Wonka JR. When my family and I moved to the greater Washington, DC area, I continued teaching and am currently the 3rd and 4th grade music teacher at Norwood School. I have continued composing, studying musical theater and teaching my students about the history of musical theater.
As I grew as a composer, I heard an episode of NPR’s Fresh Air discussing a new book, The Doctors Blackwell. I was immediately drawn to the story of the ambitious, brave, arrogant and selfless first woman doctor in America, Elizabeth Blackwell. I began work on a show called Doctor Blackwell last year and developed the story with a friend who is earning her Ph.D. in the History of Medicine. I have written a full draft of the show thus far and have done two table reads in Bethesda, MD.
In the fall of 2023, I was accepted to the Maestra Mentorship program and have begun my six months of mentorship with composer Deborah Wicks La Puma. With Doctor Blackwell, I have participated in a Paper Kite Arts Summer Musical Workshop with Kit Goldstein Grant as well all three parts of TRU’s How to Write a Musical that Works workshop and the Writer/Producer Speed Date. Finally, I have had the privilege of lecturing at the Annapolis Opera on Into the Woods and Lost in the Stars as part of their pre-show lecture series.
